The Belgian data mining community

On June 19th, the first Data mining Garden workshop successfully launched the Belgian Data mining Community. The event brought together 60 people involved with data mining activities in business: all the relevant companies from the banking and telecom sectors were present along with people from the energy, distribution and pharmaceutical industries. Representatives from the academic field were also present.

After an introduction by the chairman, Alain Glickman Porush, Director of Customer Insights at France Telecom / Orange Group, the workshop started with the appropriate story of the successful introduction of data mining at AMP (international distributor of news papers), given by Johan Blomme.

After the general topic of data mining was discussed by Alain Glickman Porush and Bart Baesens from KU Leuven, Pascal Mignolet from Sara Lee/Douwe Egberts talked about his experience of data mining being introduced alongside well-established market research. His message was that the integration of both methods is not that evident, but that their future lies together, so that sustainable competitive advantages can be created for a company.

Finally, Martine George (ING), a member of the steering committee, started with a proposal for creating a general approved standard for a data miner's profile. This is reflected within the goals of the community: transform data mining from something exotic into being an established and respected part of the corporate world within Belgium.
